  • The Decay of the Iraqi Power Sector

The Iraqi dinar is still very much in its very low state. So many things in the Iraqi nations are not really looking upward. The economic situation is still as poor as it had been for sometime now. The lives of all and sundry in Iraq are still not so meaningful. The case of living below one dollar per day is still very persistent to the extent that the case is even getting all the more worsened by the day.

One of the negative situations that it is being faced by the Iraqi nation is the situation with the power sector of the country. The power sector is really suffering considerably in present times. In times past, the Iraqi power station was very capable of providing a considerable amount of power that keep the whole country well supplied with power and electricity. This was the period before the war in Iraq.

But since the period the war had come up till now, things had not been as it had always been with practically everything in Iraq. It is not only the power sector that was negatively affected even all parts of the Iraqi economy and many Iraqi sectors had been negatively affected by the war.

The sanction placed on the country by the United Nations also has its own negative impact on the Iraqi dinar, the Iraqi economy and the Iraqi power sector. At the end of the day, the Iraqi power sector that had initially been able to boast of something very considerable as far as power supply is concerned could not boast of anything reasonable anymore.

Presently, the Iraqi power sector is only able to supply about one hour of electricity per day. This is a far cry from what the power sector had been capable of doing before the Iraqi war and the United Nations sanction.

This situation is of course taking its toll on economic situation in Iraq. Various business owners who have one form of business or the other that requires constant power supply have no other choice than to improvise and seek for alternative power supply to compensate for the present down trend in this very important sector. Majority of them had to purchase generators that help them to supply electricity.

These business owners had to buy fuel for the generator and this is causing a considerable increase in the total over head cost and it is also having a very negative impact on the profit making capability of these businesses. At the end of the day, the already compromised economic situation becomes all the more worsened by the failure of the power sector.

It is not only the economic situation of Iraq that is negatively affected by this power problem. Even the health situation of Iraqis too is getting worsened. The generators we are talking about do emit a chemical compound known as carbon monoxide. This chemical compound can be very dangerous to health when one mistakenly inhales it. The increase in the number of those using it leads to increase in the level of pollution of the atmosphere.
