  • More than 10,000 new cars entered Kurdistan in 2009

    January 7, 2010

More than 10,000 new vehicles entered Kurdistan Region in 2009, a source said. Every day, a large number of vehicles including trucks, cars, agricultural machines, motorcycles and others, entered Kurdistan Region through the Haji Omaran border gate, deputy Director of the town’s Customs, Salam Arab, said Sunday. According to statistical figures, more than 10,600 vehicles have crossed into Kurdistan Region since the beginning of the year. But the large number of vehicles moving into Kurdistan Region can create serious problems according to the region’s Traffic Directorate’s Press Secretary Qadir Hasan.

The phenomenon has spread to the southern and central parts of Iraq too, Hasan said. “Around 250 thousand vehicles are moving on the roads in Erbil city every day.” he said. Importing the large number of vehicles to Kurdistan creates serious traffic problems, as well as harming the economy of the region, Hasan said, because “a large amount of Kurdistan Region’s money goes out”
