  • Iraqi Political Blocs and the Damascus Meeting

The unsettled political clime in Iraq is taking so long to the extent that everyone is getting very apprehensive about the situation. Every Iraqi is waiting for the Iraqi government to finally bring some resolution to the situation at hand but it is as if the waiting of these innocent people is not having a particular ending. The international community too seems to be taking very strong interest in the happenings in Iraq. Various countries of the world had already started speaking with the Iraqi authority about the formation of a unity government that will include all the political parties that participated in the past Iraqi election held in March.

This wouldn’t have been the case if not for the inconclusive nature of the Iraqi election. The parties with the highest number of votes differed from each other by a very tiny margin, which ensures that the political party with the highest number of votes couldn’t be declared as the winner for the post of prime minister. Since then till now, Iraq had been experiencing some level of downturn because of the unsuccessful election.

There had been several moves by the present Iraqi government to bring a final solution to the situation in the Iraqi political clime. The government accedes to the suggestion made by several international bodies for the formation of an Iraqi unity government. This gives the hope that there may be some degree of hope to the settling of the present situation in Iraq.

There was a suggestion by the incumbent Iraqi government for the meeting of all the political parties to meet in Damascus, Syria. Damascus is seen as a neutral ground where all the parties can meet and make final decisions about the political future of Iraq without the distraction that can hinder such discussion at home. The Syria meeting is expected to be a free ground where no political bloc will have any kind of undue dominance over the other. It is hoped that the political parties will be able to arrive at a final decision concerning the Iraq situation.

The other challenge that seems to be looming concerning this decision is the acceptability of the Syria meeting by all the political blocs. It is normal for individuals to have different views and opinions about things. There is the fear of the difference in opinion of these political parties to bring some delay or rejection to the proposed Damascus meeting.

The latest light at the end of the tunnel was the call by the Haidaraljorani for a meeting of all the political parties that were involved in the Iraqi polls to meet at Damascus. With this call, there is the hope that things will finally reach some kind of conclusion within a short period of time since the call will help to ginger the political blocs to accept the Syria proposal. Whichever way things turn, the political blocs should understand the fact that all and sundry are waiting for them to reach a final conclusion soon.
